Project Description

Morven was involved in the pre-construction, construction, post construction remediation, and operational phases of the Amherst Island Wind Farm. Amherst Island is located approximately 10 km west of Kingston in Lake Ontario. The island with a population of 450 is 3 km offshore and accessible by ferry or barge only. This renewable energy project was developed by Algonquin Power and consists of 26 3.2MW wind turbines on various sites around the island. Morven had completed a number of major civil projects on the Island including the Municipal Drain (1984), Box Culvert Replacements on Front Rd and Stella 40 Ft Rd (2011) and Front Road Reconstruction (2016) when Pennecon Heavy Civil Ltd. approached them to work on the pre-construction phase (early works) of the project. Morven continued to work on the construction phase of the project for the next 24 months:

Pre-construction

  • Clearing, grubbing, and construction of 11 hectare island laydown area with stormwater pond, silt control berms
  • Construction of the island dock access road and granular laydown area for barging equipment and dock construction
  • Construction of 4km of access roads to Island Central Staging Area
  • Construction of the mainland dock access road and temporary mainland laydown area
  • Construction of a temporary paved mainland recreation road within a park adjacent to mainland project site

Construction

  • Construction of mainland switching station including concrete foundations, fencing, granular, culverts, and contaminated soil management
  • Civil work for the shoreline connections for a 3 km submarine power cable and assistance to the submarine cable installer during marine installation
  • Onshore trenching and rock excavation, rock boring under a major highway, and duct installation for power cable
  • Civil work for island sub-station including clearing, topsoil stripping and rock excavation
  • Supply and installation of permanent and temporary fencing and gates on turbine sites with farming activities
  • Supply and delivery of specialized aggregates for turbine bases during seasonal load restrictions
  • Supply of dump trucks, stone slinger and hydro-vacuum trucks
  • Provision of traffic control services for island and mainland road crossings and management of logistics for wind turbine component and material delivery to the island on barges
  • Provision and operation of fast crew boat for daytime and overnight turbine erection crew transportation to/from the island
  • Provision of snow removal services at mainland and island laydown areas including snow/ice control on barges

Post Construction Remediation

  • Morven worked as the general contractor directly for the project developer from August 2018 until now
  • Ditching, grading, culverts and road reinforcement for 22 km of municipal roads
  • Grading, ditching, and remediation of 26 turbine sites including seeding and fill management
  • Backfilling and winter protection of Operations and Maintenance Building foundations, grading for final building slab
  • Repairs and adjustments to municipal road guiderails
  • Repairs and grading to all access roads to turbine sites
  • Provision and operation of fast crew boat for all project staff working on island
  • Supply and installation of 7 km of new property fencing and gates
  • Installation of septic system at Operations and Maintenance Building in 2020

Operations

  • Provision of snow clearing/removal services at turbine sites
  • Provision of seasonal plot maintenance services
